Welcome to Justice Class

Welcome back to the Summer Term, Year 6!

Dear Year 6 families, welcome back to your final term in primary school! Though the first half of this term is only 6 weeks, there’s a lot going on to get excited about, including a Bank Holiday! The Home Learning Grid and Curriculum Jigsaw have been shared elsewhere on the Class Pages, as well as more information for this term in the Summer section. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the office.

Welcome back, Year 6!

Dear Year 6 families, I hope you all had a wonderful festive season. It’s a new year and a new term at Keyham Barton and I hope the children are as ready to get back to some great learning together as I am! This is just a quick update about the goals and expectations of the Spring term. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the office.

THE RESIDENTIAL

As you may have noticed, we are getting really excited about our residential at Nethercott House from Monday 15th - Friday 19th January. A kit list was shared last term - please let us know if you would like another copy or have any further questions. I will be sending out a letter this week giving more information and am happy to arrange an after-school meeting for final questions at some point next week if enough parents request one.

REMINDERS

  • Children can come into school from 8:35 and the school day ends at 3:15

  • Please help us by ensuring your child is on time in the mornings and let the office know in writing that your child has permission to walk home by themselves.

  • Home School Reading Diaries need to be used to record whenever your child reads at home. In Year 6, I am happy for children to record their own reading in their diaries, noting down the book title and the pages they read.

  • Reading Diaries must be brought into school daily along with your child’s current reading book to help us monitor progress in reading.

  • We are more than happy for children to read their own books at home, though they are still able to borrow books from our KS2 library. Anything that gets them reading gets our approval!

  • A bottle of water (with a sports cap rather than a screw-top) can be brought into class and children are able to access these during lessons. While funky metal thermos flasks are very popular at the moment, they are heavy, noisy and their screw lids make them a spill hazard. If possible, please stick to reusable plastic bottles.

  • Break time snacks (fruit or a cereal bar) can be kept in your child’s tray/coat pocket.

  • If your child has additional items they need to bring in, please let a class adult know in advance – accommodations can be made.

Roles and Responsibilities

All of our Year 6 children have a responsibility in supporting their younger peers with regards to our behavior expectations and values in line with our school mission statement. Though our School Councillors and House Captains play a more public role in this, we expect all of Year 6 to represent our school positively at all times, both within school and in any external settings.

It is also important that they wear the correct school uniform and keep to the rules regarding jewelry and shoes.  Please contact the office if you need any advice or have queries about the school dress code.

In Summary:

Children come to school:

  • With a warm, weather-appropriate coat, which they will hang up in the cloakroom

  • With a snack, which they will put in their tray.  It would be helpful if this was separate to their lunchboxes.

  • With a lunchbox (if needed), which will be placed on the appropriate shelf.

  • With a plastic water bottle (with sports cap)

  • With a reading book and their Reading Diary.

  • Wearing school PE kit on Tuesdays and Fridays

I am really looking forward to another great term with Year 6 - they are such an enthusiastic, respectful and entertaining class!

Best wishes,

Mrs Chambers

Welcome to Year 6!

Welcome back to a fresh new year at Keyham Barton! We are so excited to see what this new school year has in store for us and the Year 6 team can’t wait to go on a fantastic learning journey with our new Class Justice!

Year 6 is an exciting and challenging year, as well as being your child’s final year in primary education. As part of the ‘Upper Key Stage Two Learning Team’, we expect Year 6 children to take a more mature and independent approach towards learning. These skills are developed throughout the year through a variety of tasks and lessons and provide the key foundations that prepare them for the new challenges of secondary school.

A few updates and reminders

  • Children can come into school from 8:35 - 8:45 and the school day ends at 3:15

  • Please help us by ensuring your child is on time and in class by 8:45

  • If you wish for your child to walk home by themselves, the office must have written confirmation of this for safeguarding reasons.

  • All children have their own individual set of resources provided in class and we ask that children do not bring in pencil cases or similar resources from home.

  • Home School Reading Diaries have been handed out and these need to be brought in for daily check-ins to encourage regular home reading - the best way to support your child with their learning!

  • We are more than happy for children to read their own books at home, though they are still able to borrow books from our KS2 library that are Accelerated Reader-levelled. Anything that gets them reading gets our approval!

  • A bottle of water (with a sports cap rather than a screw-top) can be kept in class. While metal thermos/hydro flasks are very popular at the moment, they are heavy, noisy and their screw lids make them a spill hazard. If possible, please stick to reusable plastic bottles. Children are able to access their water throughout the day.

  • Break time snacks (ideally fruit or a cereal bar) can be kept in your child’s tray/coat pocket.

  • If your child has additional hygiene items they need to bring in, please let a class adult know in advance – accommodations can be made.

We are looking forward to a really good year with our new Year 6. They have settled in beautifully and have impressed everyone with their eager enthusiasm already!

Any concerns or worries, please do not hesitate to contact any member of the team.

Best wishes,

Mrs Chambers
