Keyham Barton Catholic Primary School

Sports Premium

Physical activity has numerous benefits for children and young people’s physical health, as well as their mental wellbeing (increasing self-esteem and emotional wellbeing and lowering anxiety and depression). Children who are physically active are happier, more resilient and more trusting of their peers. Ensuring that pupils have access to sufficient daily activity can also have wider benefits for pupils and schools, improving behaviour as well as enhancing academic achievement.
Each year, we set out a spending Action Plan for our Sport Premium, which is reviewed regularly and updated to best fit the needs of our children and the school.  During the 2025-26 academic year, physical literacy will be an important part of the children's experience at school.  This along with mental health and well-being, is a school priority as identified on the School Improvement Plan.

Sustaining Improvements
At Keyham Barton Catholic Primary School, sustaining improvements in PE and school sport means creating a culture where physical activity is valued, enjoyable and accessible to every child.  We will achieve this by offering a broad and balanced curriculum that blends traditional sports with alternative activities, ensuring lessons are delivered by confident, well-trained staff and giving children opportunities to experience success at all levels. Engagement is strengthened when pupils are offered choice, their voices are heard, and activities are inclusive for all abilities. Beyond lessons, extracurricular clubs, strong community links and school competitions help maintain enthusiasm and provide pathways for lifelong participation. Regular investment in facilities, equipment, and staff development, alongside celebrating effort and achievement, further supports sustainability. By involving children as sports leaders, encouraging staff and families to model active lifestyles and using funding strategically for long-term impact, Keyham Barton Catholic Primary School can embed physical activity as a central part of school life, ensuring lasting improvements in PE and sport.

Swimming
Every year we ensure children have access to high quality swimming lessons at the Plymouth Life Centre. This takes place in Year 4 so that those who do not achieve the National Curriculum first time are given a further opportunity.  This academic year, we will provide additional swimming sessions to any child in Year 6 who require additonal support.  This is an area that the school needs to develop further and the sports premium funding will support this.  We will also promote effective partnerships and encourage parents/carers to provide opportunities for their child to swim outside of the school day.
School Games - Gold Award
We are delighted to announce that the school has gained 'Gold' status for the 2024-25 academic year.
