The study of a foreign language is now statutory for all pupils in Key Stage 2; however languages have been a key feature of the curriculum here at Keyham for over eight years!
All Key Stage 2 classes have a dedicated lesson for 30 minutes (Years 3&4) to 40 minutes (Years 5&6) per week. Classes are taught by Mrs. Lewis, a specialist teacher of Primary Languages. The main language taught throughout is French; however there are also opportunities for “taster” lessons in languages related to the curriculum (such as Japanese and Latin) or to celebrate other languages in our community (eg Portuguese).
Emphasis is placed as much on understanding and speaking in French as on reading and writing.
Language lessons support pupils’ Literacy by reinforcing and applying grammar, punctuation and sentence-building skills. We use all the latest in communication technology to share work and language with pupils in our partner schools in France. The overall aim is to encourage a thirst and enjoyment in language learning and to provide pupils with the skills they will need to learn whatever language they may need in their future lives.
